The Kettle
Where the mountain dips, in a place called the Kettle, is where you first can spot the rain. When I was young, I used to think that the rain started there, up from the springs that filled our reservoirs, into the clouds that gathered in the alcove.
We rarely went to the mountain - it was a place filled with rattlesnakes and bears. The lowlands, wet and unpredictable, could swallow you before you even knew that you stepped into a quagmire. Whether this is true, is still yet to be discovered.
As children, we kept to the fields and picked the berries that grew wild in the fence rows. It has always been the wild lands that have called to me and the wild spaces that border the cultivated fields, that have interested me the most.

Magnolias
This morning
I went out to find peace
I found magnolias
I found the moon

What does it mean to be human?
What does it mean to sing?
I pick up a match
And light the kindling -
Straw, dried grass, small pieces of wood
When the first flames come it is difficult to look away.
My eyes are happy to watch the flames dance
There was a time that we danced.
I hear the footsteps
The footsteps following the drum
The drum from the hide of an animal, of wildness
With wildness
Beckon in the wildness
What does it mean to be human?
Does it mean that we sing?
but, yes, the birds, the wolves, the whales
All singing with us
I close my eyes, I feel the warmth of the fire
I hear the beat of the drum, I open my mouth
And I release a sound that feels like a song I sang yesterday
A yesterday when words were
spoken,
sung,
carved in stone.
The cycle of it all
The cycle of it all
I am here now
So are you
And isn’t it beautiful to be here together.
I am here now
So are you
Let’s sing
Sing the songs that we once knew.
-
Morning.
Crow calls.
Listen longer.
Hear the songbirds.
It is you I dream of.
When will the last of the rains fall?
The birds,
they must build their nests,
sing their calls.
Things take time.
If we give peace,
we will have peace.
If we give love,
we will get love.
If we spread happiness...
Sometimes,
it is difficult.
To place one foot in front of the other,
and to remember:
No matter the destruction,
There will always be
someone, somewhere
who has planted flowers.

This world is not
made of straight lines
and stillness.
Do you notice
the water as it moves
in and out carving the shore?
I stand
breathing.
The rose hips have dried,
but still hang
from the bush limbs.
I try not to step
on the jellyfish,
for their sake.
